In 1856, at the age of just 21, textile merchant Thomas Burberry founded his first textile business in Basingstoke, Hampshire, England. Burberry's aim was to develop clothing that optimally protected people from any vagaries of the British weather. In 1879, Burberry developed the gabardine fabric for this purpose, a breathable, water-repellent and at the same time extremely durable fabric that was intended to revolutionize the previously heavy and uncomfortable rainwear. In 1888, Burberry patented gabardine. In the following years he began to trade the material internationally. Three years later, Burberry opened what is probably the most famous branch of its label on the Haymarket shopping street near Piccadilly Circus in the heart of London. Until 2007 it served as the flagship store and headquarters of the fashion empire. The world-famous check pattern, the so-called Burberry Check, has existed since 1924. Initially just a pattern for the lining, the check was later registered as a trademark and now adorns the outside of many Burberry products.

The trench coat

Burberry became known to an audience of millions thanks to its trench coat. To this day, the company is synonymous with the classic British raincoat. The development of the trench coat was based on an order from the British military administration. During the First World War, the Burberry trench coat was very popular among the ranks of British officers. Burberry complemented the raincoat with additional epaulettes, belts and D-rings for attaching military equipment for use in the army. A wind shield provided additional protection in adverse weather and the rain shield allowed water to drain away cleanly. The enthusiasm of the British army was so great that over half a million pieces of the trench coat were sold. Burberry jackets were also used on the Antarctic expeditions of Robert Scott, Ernest Shackleton and Roald Amundsen, which made headlines around the world.

Burberry in Hollywood and with the Queen

In the 1930s, Burberry expanded its American business and inevitably found its way to Hollywood. Hollywood stars like Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's and Peter Sellers in The Pink Panther wore Burberry trench coats, making the brand famous in the United States and around the world. Since 1955, the House of Burberry has also been the royal purveyor to Queen Elizabeth II and, since 1989, to the Prince of Wales.
