A long road to a big name

The idea behind Closed was simple and ingenious at the same time: The two French fashion designers Marithé and François Girbaud wanted to found Italy's first denim label in the early 1970s, which would stand for casual sportswear and radical design at the same time: ""That's it"" - in French “C'est ça”, abbreviated “ÇA”. Unfortunately, difficulties awaited the two designers, as a large Dutch company felt that their trademark rights had been violated by the naming. During the trial, the designers marketed their collections under the file number “11342.” ÇA lost the legal battle, which is why the company had to be renamed. The brand has been known under the name “Closed” since 1978.

Three friends have a message

In the 1990s, Closed was sold to the Hamburg business partners Hans Leplow and Günther Giers and has been owned by three friends Gordon Giers, Til Nadler and Hans Redlefsen since 2009. The three met while studying in London and were already driven by the idea of ​​running a company together - as business partners, owners and friends.

The concept of friendship is at the heart of Closed. According to its own statements, the company only works with partners it likes. This also includes making the production process as environmentally conscious and sustainable as possible. In contrast to most other denim manufacturers, Closed has had its jeans woven, sewn and dyed exclusively by hand by three Italian family businesses for around 40 years.

Closed also has decades of collaboration with its cashmere producers in China and Italy. The lambskins for the label's jackets are pure by-products of the meat industry and are produced by a Spanish family business. The quilted jackets from Closed do not contain down feathers. And the brand's leather bags come from factories in Portugal. Last but not least, Closed is one of the few fashion companies to provide information about how, where and with whom it produces.
