Diane von Furstenberg – An unplanned career
It was by no means foreseeable that Diane Simone Michelle von Fürstenberg, as her full name was, would one day become one of the most famous fashion designers in the world. Raised in Belgium and Switzerland, she studied Spanish in Madrid and business administration in Geneva, where she met her future husband, the Swiss fashion designer Prince Egon von Fürstenberg. After marrying in France in 1969, the couple moved to New York City and became darlings of New York high society.
Diane von Furstenberg was portrayed by star artists such as Andy Warhol and Helmut Newton, among others, and enjoyed New York's luxury party life to the fullest. At the same time, she began to build her own business so that she would no longer be dependent on her now divorced husband. She began selling colorfully printed jersey dresses and in 1974 achieved a true global design success with the design of the so-called wrap dress.
A second career
After von Furstenberg retired from the fashion business in 1985 and devoted herself to a publishing house in Paris, she returned to New York City twelve years later to begin a second career as a fashion designer. Since then she has been one of the big names in the American fashion designer scene. In the years that followed, the busy entrepreneur also launched a cosmetics range and entered the home shopping business. To this day, von Furstenberg designs her exclusive women's collections.
